Why Safe-T-Metal?

We have been the leading abrasive castings company for over fifty years

Examples of why Safe-T-Metal abrasive castings are specified for so many quality projects:

Minimum thickness: The thickness of abrasive castings must be increased as the width of section increases. Minimum thickness, as shown in the table, is safe (and economical) to specify except in self-supporting treads and floor plates with or without truss ribs. The thickness of these treads and plates is determined by both the width of the castings and the distance between supporting spans.

RECOMMENDED minimum thickness for aluminum self-supporting treads and floor plates is 3/8″.

Minimum Thickness Aluminum Bronze Nickel Bronze
5/16″ to 14″ to 10″ to 10″
3/8″ to 24″ to 18″ to 14″
7/16″ to 36″ to 24″ to 18″
1/2″ to 44″ to 30″ to 24″
5/8″ to 44″ to 30″
The uniform “anatomy” of the wearing surface:
Plain V-Groove Cross Hatched

In the wearing surface of every Safe-T-Metal casting, the abrasive grains of tough, electric-furnace Corundum are embedded uniformly at the time of the casting. These grains, by chilling the molten metal, increase the wearing qualities of the metal itself.

Safe-T-Metal castings combine these attributes: permanent roughness of the anti-slip surface extreme durability of both the grain and the metal increased resistance to corrosion, the elements.

The ease of specifying, ordering, and installing:

Brief Specification: Stair treads, thresholds, and other abrasive castings shall be Safe-T-Metal (bronze) (nickel bronze) (aluminum) castings containing abrasive grains (electric furnace Corundum) embedded in the wearing surfaces at time of casting.

Design: Specify – Plain, V-Grooved, or Hatched

Safe-T-Metal abrasive castings, in bronze, nickel bronze, or aluminum alloy, are easy to specify: to the brief specification above simply add the style designation and the dimensions (thickness must be increased with width).

Installation is simple: holes predrilled and countersunk at the foundry nosing for fresh concrete with standard steel loose anchors and bolts or integrally cast anchors. Exposed wearing surface to contain not less than two (2) ounces per sq. ft. of abrasive granules embedded in the top metal surface.
